Steam's announced seasonal sales for 2026–2027
Valve's Steamworks documentation, which tells developers when to submit discounts, listed these seasonal sales on 3 November 2026:
- Steam Winter Sale 2026: 17 December 2026 to 4 January 2027
- Steam Spring Sale 2027: 18 March to 25 March 2027
- Steam Summer Sale 2027: 24 June to 8 July 2027
- Steam Autumn Sale 2027: listed as TBD (to be decided)
Valve says it runs four Steam-wide seasonal sales a year, and any game released at least 30 days before a sale's start date can take part with a discount. Taking part is the developer's choice, so a specific game isn't guaranteed to be discounted.
Steam Next Fest and themed fests: free demos to try first
Steam Next Fest is a free event where you can try demos of upcoming games. Valve listed two for 2027: 22 February to 1 March 2027 and 14 to 21 June 2027. Demos are a zero-cost way to rule out games before they ever reach your wishlist.
Valve also runs short themed sale events ("Fests"). Announced dates on the check date included an Auto-Battler RPG Fest from 16 to 23 November 2026, and in 2027 a Couch Co-Op Fest (8 to 15 February), Racing Fest (12 to 19 April) and Real-Time Strategy Fest (10 to 17 May), among others. These spotlight a genre; discounts are set by each developer.
Themed fests are useful for narrowing a wishlist to one genre at a time. Because Valve says free games, upcoming games and games with demos can also take part, a fest page can be a good way to find something to try at no cost before committing money in the bigger seasonal sales.
PlayStation Store: typical sale pattern (not announced)
Sony does not publish a yearly PlayStation Store sale calendar in advance, so the following describes recurring patterns, not confirmed dates. In past years the PlayStation Store has typically run a large sale around the end of the year, a spring sale, and its Days of Play event in late spring or early summer. For reference, PlayStation's official blog announced that Days of Play 2026 began on 27 May 2026.
Days of Play has in the past included offers on PS Plus 12-month memberships for new members, but the content of each event changes every year. Treat any future date as unconfirmed until PlayStation announces it.
Xbox and Nintendo eShop: typical sale pattern (not announced)
Microsoft and Nintendo also announce sales shortly before they start rather than publishing a calendar. In past years both have typically run discounts around late November, a winter holiday sale, and occasional publisher or franchise sales during the year. None of these are confirmed for 2026 or 2027 at the time of writing.
The practical approach is the same on every platform: add games you're interested in to the store's wishlist feature, which can notify you when a listed game is discounted, rather than trying to guess dates.
How to plan your spending around the calendar
- Set a budget for each sale before it starts, not during it. A tight list stops bundle-buying you'll never play.
- Wishlist early. Wishlists help you notice when a game you actually want is reduced.
- Try first. Use Steam Next Fest demos, free trials and subscription trials to rule out games before a sale. See our guide to paying less for games.
- Check the refund rules for the store before buying. Steam's policy, for example, is different from PlayStation's. Our UK game refunds guide compares them.
- Compare with subscriptions. A game in a sale can still cost more than a month of a subscription that includes it.
Subscription offers around sale seasons
Subscription prices also move around events. PlayStation has advertised savings on 12-month PS Plus memberships for new members during past Days of Play events, and Microsoft regularly shows introductory offers: on 3 November 2026 the UK Xbox store listed £1.00 for 14 days on Game Pass plans, followed by the normal monthly price. These offers change and aren't guaranteed. Before subscribing to catch an offer, check the regular price you'll pay afterwards. Current prices are on our PS Plus and Game Pass pages.
Steam's sale rules that affect your wallet
A few points from Valve's own documentation and policies that matter when you buy during a sale:
- Games must have been released at least 30 days before a seasonal sale starts to take part, so very new releases usually aren't discounted in that sale.
- Discounts are submitted by developers. A game on your wishlist may sit out one sale and join the next.
- Steam's refund policy still applies to sale purchases: refunds within 14 days of purchase with less than two hours of playtime. That gives you a safety net if a sale purchase turns out not to suit you.
Bundles bought in a sale are refundable only if combined playtime across everything in the bundle is under two hours, so test one game at a time.
Working out a sale price per hour
A discount only matters if you'll play the game. Our metric is pounds per hour: the price divided by an estimated range of hours you'll realistically play. A £20 game you play for 40 hours is about £0.50 per hour; a £5 game you abandon after an hour is £5 per hour. Before a sale, jot down a realistic hours range for each wishlisted game and divide the sale price by both ends of it. Published completion-time estimates vary a lot by play style, so treat any figure as a range, not a promise.
Example using the method: a game reduced to £15 that you expect to play for 15 to 30 hours costs about £0.50 to £1.00 per hour. A game reduced to £8 that you expect to play for 2 to 4 hours costs £2.00 to £4.00 per hour, despite the lower price. The cheaper game isn't always the better value.
Why sale dates move and how to stay current
Valve updates its upcoming-events page as plans change, and the Autumn Sale 2027 was still listed as TBD on our check date. Console stores can bring sales forward, extend them, or change what's included at short notice. We re-check Steam's official page when updating this calendar; if you're planning a big purchase around a date here, confirm it on the official store the week before.
