PS Plus price UK: every tier, and when it pays off

PlayStation Plus comes in three tiers, and the gap between paying monthly and paying yearly is bigger than most people realise. Here are the UK prices as listed on playstation.com on 3 November 2026, what each tier actually adds, and a plain way to work out whether it beats simply buying the games you want.

Break-even: Essential at £59.99/year

*Only counts if the games you'd buy are actually in the subscription's catalogue. Catalogues change.

On yearly plans, Extra costs £40 more than Essential (£99.99 vs £59.99) and Premium £20 more than Extra (£119.99 vs £99.99). If you would otherwise buy just one or two catalogue games a year at £20–£40 each, the upgrade to Extra roughly breaks even; if you'd buy none, Essential (or nothing) is the cheaper choice.

PS Plus tiers in one minute

Think of PS Plus as a ladder. Essential is the bottom rung: it unlocks online multiplayer for most paid games, adds a set of monthly games you can claim, gives cloud saves and member discounts. Extra adds the Game Catalogue, a rotating library of PS5 and PS4 games you can download and play for as long as they stay in the catalogue and you stay subscribed. It also includes a curated Ubisoft+ Classics selection, which PlayStation values at £6.99 a month on its own page.

Premium sits on top. It adds the Classics Catalogue of older PlayStation games, time-limited Game Trials of selected new releases, cloud streaming (including PS5 games) and the Sony Pictures Catalogue of films. If you mainly want to play online with friends, Essential is the only rung that matters for that one feature.

Monthly vs 12-month PS Plus: the gap in pounds

This is where most of the saving lives. Paying monthly for a full year costs 12 × the monthly price, which is a lot more than the 12-month plan:

  • Essential: 12 × £7.99 = £95.88 vs £59.99 yearly, a difference of £35.89
  • Extra: 12 × £11.99 = £143.88 vs £99.99 yearly, a difference of £43.89
  • Premium: 12 × £14.99 = £179.88 vs £119.99 yearly, a difference of £59.89

PlayStation's own page describes the Premium 12-month plan as 33% off compared with 12 single months, which matches the sums above. The 3-month plans sit in between. The trade-off is commitment: if you only play heavily for a couple of months a year, a short burst on the monthly plan can still cost less than a full year you barely use.

Rule of thumb from the numbers: if you expect to keep PS Plus for more than about 8 months of the year, the 12-month plan is cheaper for every tier.

Who actually needs Essential

Essential is effectively the online-play licence on PS5 and PS4. If your household's main games are free-to-play titles, check each game's store page before subscribing, because online requirements can differ between games. If you play offline single-player games only, Essential's main value is the monthly games and cloud saves, which may or may not be worth £59.99 a year to you.

A sensible test: list the paid games you actually play online. If that list is empty, you are paying for monthly games and discounts, and you can judge those on their own merits.

Is the Game Catalogue worth the jump to Extra?

The catalogue is the reason most people upgrade. Its value depends entirely on whether it contains games you would otherwise buy. Games join and leave the catalogue over time, so treat it as a rotating library rather than a permanent collection. If you stop subscribing, you lose access to catalogue games.

Before upgrading, browse the current catalogue list on PlayStation's site and write down the games you would genuinely play in the next few months. Then compare the price difference (£40 a year from Essential to Extra on 12-month plans) with what those specific games would cost you to buy, ideally at a sale price rather than RRP. Our subscription-or-buy guide walks through that sum step by step.

What Premium adds for its extra £20 a year

On yearly plans Premium costs £20 more than Extra. For that you get the Classics Catalogue, Game Trials, cloud streaming and the film catalogue. Game Trials let you try selected games for a limited time before deciding whether to buy, which can save money if it stops one disappointing purchase a year. Cloud streaming is useful if you want to start a game without waiting for a large download, but it depends on your broadband.

If none of those four extras is something you'd use more than occasionally, Extra covers the bulk of the library value for less.

PS Plus cost per hour at three play levels

Using the 12-month prices, here is what each tier costs per month and per hour if you play from what the membership unlocks:

  • Essential (£59.99 a year, about £5.00 a month): at 10 hours a month, about £0.50 per hour; at 30 hours, about £0.17.
  • Extra (£99.99 a year, about £8.33 a month): at 10 hours, about £0.83 per hour; at 30 hours, about £0.28.
  • Premium (£119.99 a year, about £10.00 a month): at 10 hours, about £1.00 per hour; at 30 hours, about £0.33.

Only count hours you'd spend on things the tier provides (online play, monthly games, catalogue games). Hours in games you've bought outright don't belong in the sum unless you need Essential to play them online.

Ways to keep your PS Plus bill down

  • Switch off auto-renew right after subscribing if you want to make an active choice at renewal time; you keep access until the end of the paid period.
  • PlayStation runs promotions on 12-month memberships during some events. For example, PlayStation's Days of Play 2026 event, which started on 27 May 2026, advertised savings on 12-month memberships for new members. Future events are not guaranteed.
  • At renewal, ask whether you still use the higher tier's extras; moving down a tier is a simple way to cut the bill.
  • Check UK cancellation rights: PlayStation's UK cancellation policy lets you cancel a subscription within 14 days of the initial transaction, with a possible pro-rata deduction for use. See our game refunds guide.
