Quick wins
- Play the demo or a trial before buying any full-price game.
- Wishlist instead of browsing sale pages.
- Check whether a subscription you already pay for includes the game.
- Switch to a yearly plan if you keep a subscription most of the year.
- Set spending limits in parental controls on every device.
Try before you spend: demos, trials and Next Fest
The cheapest game is the one you didn't buy and wouldn't have played. Free demos are the first filter. Valve's Steam Next Fest is an event built around demos of upcoming games, with dates announced for 22 February to 1 March 2027 and 14 to 21 June 2027. Console stores also list demos for many games.
Some subscriptions add time-limited trials: EA Play lists trials of selected new releases for up to 10 hours, and PlayStation lists Game Trials as a PS Plus Premium benefit. A trial that stops one disappointing full-price purchase is worth more than any discount.
Timing: wishlists and the sale calendar
Most games drop in price after launch, and every major store runs seasonal sales. Valve publishes Steam's dates in advance: the Winter Sale 2026 runs from 17 December 2026 to 4 January 2027, and the Summer Sale 2027 from 24 June to 8 July 2027. Console stores announce their sales nearer the time. Our UK game sale calendar lists confirmed dates and labels the rest as typical patterns.
Use wishlists: they keep your list focused and can alert you when a game you've chosen is discounted, so you don't browse a sale page and buy on impulse.
Share what you already own
Platform family features can stretch one purchase across a household:
- Steam Families lets up to six people in a family group play games from each other's libraries. If two people want to play the same game at the same time, the family needs two copies.
- Nintendo virtual game cards let you lend a digital game to a member of your Nintendo Account family group for up to 14 days. Nintendo notes some software can't be lent.
- Apple Arcade can be shared with up to five family members at no extra cost.
- Nintendo Switch Online family membership covers up to eight Nintendo Accounts for £31.49 a year (checked 3 Nov 2026).
Each platform has its own rules on who counts as family and which devices are covered, so check before relying on it.
Pick the right subscription, or none
Subscriptions can be excellent value for heavy players and poor value for light ones. A few rules from the prices we checked on 3 November 2026:
- Yearly plans are much cheaper than paying monthly all year: PS Plus Essential is £59.99 for 12 months versus £95.88 for 12 single months at £7.99.
- Avoid doubling up: EA Play is included in Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass; a Ubisoft+ Classics selection is included in PS Plus Extra and Game Pass Ultimate.
- One month can beat a purchase: a month of Ubisoft+ Premium is £14.99 if you can finish the game you want in that time.
Our subscription-or-buy guide shows the sums.
Cut the cost of subscriptions you already pay for
Before looking for new savings, audit existing subscriptions. Check your PlayStation, Microsoft, Nintendo, Apple, EA and Ubisoft accounts for active plans and their renewal dates. Three questions for each:
- Has anyone used it in the last month?
- Is it on monthly billing when yearly would be cheaper (or the reverse)?
- Is it duplicated by another plan you already pay for?
For example, on 3 November 2026 PS Plus Extra was £99.99 for 12 months against £143.88 for 12 single months at £11.99. Switching a long-term member to the yearly plan saves £43.89 a year without changing anything else. On the other side, a Ubisoft+ Premium yearly plan (£149.99) only beats monthly billing if you'd use it for about 10 months or more.
Physical vs digital: the trade-offs
Neither format is always cheaper. Digital games are often discounted in store sales and you can't lose the disc, but you usually can't resell them. Physical copies can be resold or traded in afterwards, which lowers the real cost of a game you finish and don't replay, and are often discounted by retailers some time after launch. Check whether a physical copy contains the full game or requires a download, which the box or retailer listing normally states.
For families, digital has one money-saving feature worth noting: sharing within a platform's family features (covered above) can mean one purchase serves several players. Physical discs can be passed between consoles without accounts. Decide which matters more in your house before choosing a format for a new game.
Trade-in and retailer price promises
Some UK retailers offer trade-in credit for used games and consoles, and some run price-match or price-promise schemes where they'll match a competitor's lower price under set conditions. The terms vary between retailers and change over time, so read the specific retailer's own conditions (for example, which competitors count and whether online prices are included) before relying on one. Trade-in values usually fall over time, so trading in soon after finishing a game tends to return more.
Keep in-game spending in check
For many families the biggest gaming cost isn't the game, it's optional purchases inside it. Every major platform offers parental controls and spending limits: set them on consoles, phones and tablets, and review purchase history each month. Apple Arcade is one option worth knowing about here: Apple says its games have no ads and no in-app purchases, for £6.99 a month or £49.99 a year (checked 3 Nov 2026).
A simple yearly game budget
Decide a yearly gaming budget first, then split it: a fixed amount for any subscription you'll keep all year, and the rest for purchases timed to sales. Track what you spend in a note or spreadsheet. Dividing each purchase by the hours you actually played afterwards, our pounds-per-hour measure, shows which kinds of games and plans give your household the most play for the money, so next year's budget can lean towards them.
Know your refund window before you buy
Refund rules are part of the price. Steam offers refunds within 14 days of purchase with less than two hours of playtime. PlayStation's UK policy lets you cancel a game within 14 days only if you haven't started downloading or streaming it, unless it's faulty. Nintendo says it can't refund mistaken purchases or games you don't like. Our UK refunds guide has the details.
Questions
Are cheap key websites legal?
We don't cover grey-market key resellers. Keys from unofficial sellers can be revoked, and you lose the official store's refund and support routes. This guide sticks to official stores and features.
Is digital or physical cheaper?
It depends. Digital games are often discounted in store sales; physical games can be resold or traded in afterwards. Compare the price minus any likely resale value.
Can I share games with my family?
Yes, within each platform's rules: for example Steam Families (up to six people), Nintendo virtual game card lending to your family group, and Apple Arcade Family Sharing with up to five family members.
Do retailers in the UK price match games?
Some do under their own conditions, which differ between retailers. Read the specific retailer's terms before relying on a price promise.
Is a subscription always cheaper than buying?
No. It depends on how many games you'd play from it and for how long. A light player can pay more per hour on a subscription than by buying one game in a sale.
