Is Cyberpunk 2077 good value? £ per hour, worked out

Cyberpunk 2077's main story is relatively short for an open-world RPG, but its side content is extensive. At £49.99 on Steam, the value depends on how much of Night City you explore.

Based on GGRecon's guide, which estimates 25-30 hours for the main story, up to 60 hours with side content and well over 100 for completionists; the Phantom Liberty expansion is estimated to add another 20-30 hours. Prices are RRPs checked 3 November 2026; sales and editions change the maths.

Your price, your hours

Our rule of thumb: under £1/hr = bargain, £1–£3 = solid, over £3 = pricey per hour. It's a guide, not a verdict on fun.

On the £49.99 Steam base price, the main story costs roughly £1.43 to £2.00 per hour, and a fuller run around £0.50 to £0.83. In our editorial view it is good value for players who enjoy side quests, but less so for those who only follow the main story. (Our editorial view.)

A main story that is shorter than you might expect

GGRecon puts the main story at 25 to 30 hours. We use 25 to 35 hours to allow for players who take some detours. That is fairly short for a big open-world RPG, and it pushes the main-story cost per hour higher than some rivals.

£49.99 ÷ 25–35 hours = roughly £1.43–£2.00 per hour for the main story.

The story itself is linear in places, with choices that affect relationships and which ending you see.

The city itself is dense and vertical, and much of the atmosphere comes from simply moving through it. Players who enjoy soaking up a setting will naturally drift towards the upper end of the main range.

Choices made early on, including your character's background, affect how some conversations and missions play out. That gives the story some variety, even if the main path is broadly the same.

Main-story length also depends on how much you engage with optional dialogue and exploration along the way, which is why we widen GGRecon's estimate slightly.

Side jobs are where the hours are

Much of the game's content sits in side jobs, gigs and optional storylines. GGRecon estimates up to 60 hours with side content and well over 100 for completionists. Our full range of 60 to 100 hours covers players who do most side content.

At that length, the base game works out at about £0.50–£0.83 per hour.

Many side jobs have their own small storylines rather than being simple errands, which is why players who take them on often find them as memorable as the main plot.

Our full range deliberately stops short of GGRecon's completionist figure, because only a minority of players attempt every activity. If you're one of them, your cost per hour will be lower still.

Endings, builds and the Phantom Liberty question

Multiple endings and different character builds give reasons to replay. GGRecon notes that seeing every ending takes repeat playthroughs.

The Phantom Liberty expansion is sold separately for the base game on Steam and is estimated by GGRecon to add another 20 to 30 hours. Factor in its price as well as its hours before deciding whether it improves your value. The Nintendo Switch 2 version on the UK eShop is listed as an Ultimate Edition; check the listing for exactly what is included.

A second run with a different background and build can also change how you approach missions, from stealth to direct combat. For players who enjoy that flexibility, replays lower the cost per hour further.

PC base game or Switch 2 Ultimate Edition

When checked on 3 November 2026, Steam UK listed the base game at £49.99, and the Nintendo UK eShop listed the Ultimate Edition for Nintendo Switch 2 at £59.99.

  • On Steam, it runs on Windows and Mac.
  • pegi.info also lists PlayStation and Xbox versions.
  • Steam UK showed no demo when checked.

If you already own a capable PC, the base game is the lower entry price. If you play mainly on Switch 2, the Ultimate Edition listing is the relevant one; check what it includes before comparing it with PC.

Night City by the week

Cyberpunk 2077 rewards exploration, so how you play makes a big difference. On our estimated ranges, using the Steam base price:

  • 5 hours a week: the main goal takes roughly 5 to 7 weeks, and the fuller range 12 to 20 weeks.
  • 10 hours a week: the main goal takes roughly 2.5 to 3.5 weeks, and the fuller range 6 to 10 weeks.

First-person RPGs don't suit everyone, so look at a short stint too. On the £49.99 price:

  • Stop after 8 hours and you paid about £6.25 per hour.
  • Stop after 20 hours and you paid about £2.50 per hour.

If you only follow the main story, the base game costs more per hour than Baldur's Gate 3 or Elden Ring; if you dig into side jobs, it moves much closer to them.

At five hours a week, the main story takes around five to seven weeks, while a fuller run could keep you busy for several months.

Players likely to feel short-changed

Rated PEGI 18, with violence, bad language, sex and in-game purchases descriptors listed on pegi.info, it is firmly an adult game.

  • Main-story-only players. At 25–35 hours, the cost per hour is higher than for longer RPGs.
  • People who dislike first-person games. It is played almost entirely in first person.
  • Anyone under 18. The rating is clear.

For adults who enjoy open-world RPGs and are happy to explore, Cyberpunk 2077 offers a lot of hours for its price. The value rests on engaging with the side content rather than racing through the story.
