The low end follows FromSoftware producer Yasuhiro Kitao's statement that the main route takes around 30 hours (reported by PCGamesN); the upper ends are our editorial ranges for typical first-time players who explore, drawn from press completion guides. Prices are RRPs checked 3 November 2026; sales and editions change the maths.
Our rule of thumb: under £1/hr = bargain, £1–£3 = solid, over £3 = pricey per hour. It's a guide, not a verdict on fun.
What 30 to 60 hours in the Lands Between actually involves
The headline 30-hour figure comes from FromSoftware itself and describes the main route: the bosses you must beat to reach an ending. In practice, few first-time players take that line. The open world is designed to pull you off the path, with optional dungeons, caves and whole regions you can skip entirely.
That is why we use a range of 30 to 60 hours for the main goal. Someone who reads a guide and heads straight for the required bosses sits near the bottom; someone who explores as they go, gets stuck on a boss and comes back stronger, sits near the top.
A large share of those hours is repetition. Boss fights are designed to be learned through failure, so an evening can be spent on one encounter. Whether that counts as "value" depends on whether you find the learning process satisfying or frustrating.
The world is also deliberately sparse on instructions. A lot of first-run time goes on simply finding things: a route into a castle, a hidden boss, a better weapon. Players who enjoy that sense of discovery tend to report the hours flying by; players who prefer clear markers may find them slow.
Where the 90-plus hour figure comes from
Kitao also said the game contains many dozens more hours beyond the main route, which matches what press completion guides describe. Our 90 to 130 hour "full" range covers players who clear most optional areas, side quests and bosses, without counting every achievement.
At that length the base game falls to around £0.38–£0.56 per hour, which puts it among the cheaper big-budget games per hour on this site.
Note that this range is for the base game. Steam UK also lists editions bundling the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion (£64.99 and £84.99 when checked on 3 November 2026), which add more content but also more cost, so the per-hour figure for those editions needs its own maths.
Optional content isn't filler in the usual sense. Several of the hardest and most memorable fights sit off the main route, so skipping them means missing a sizeable part of what the game is known for. That is another reason we think most buyers will land in the upper half of the main range, or beyond.
Does a second Elden Ring character earn its keep?
Replay value is unusually high for a story-driven RPG because character builds change how fights play out. A magic-focused build and a heavy-weapon build approach the same bosses in very different ways, and the game supports New Game Plus for those who want to carry on with a stronger character.
For value purposes, a second run is close to "free hours": you have already paid, and a repeat playthrough tends to be faster than the first because you know the route. If you are the sort of player who enjoys experimenting with builds, the realistic cost per hour can drop well below the figures above.
If you know you will only ever see the credits once, judge it on the main-route range instead.
Online features also add some longevity, letting players summon others for help with difficult areas. That can make tough sections more manageable, though how much you use it will vary.
Picking a platform without overpaying
On PC, the Steam UK RRP for the base game was £49.99 when checked on 3 November 2026. On Nintendo Switch 2, the UK eShop lists the Tarnished Edition at £64.99. That is £15 more, so on a 30–60 hour main route the Switch 2 version works out at roughly £1.08–£2.17 per hour.
- If you already own a PC or PlayStation/Xbox that runs it, the base edition is the lower entry price.
- The game is not cheap to try: Steam UK showed no demo for it when checked.
- Shop around official stores during sale seasons; RRPs change, and we only quote what the store showed on the check date.
A practical tip: decide on your platform before a sale rather than during one. The Switch 2 Tarnished Edition and the Steam base game are different products at different prices, so a discount on one doesn't tell you much about the other.
It also helps to check what an edition actually contains before comparing prices. A higher price that includes an expansion you will play is a different proposition from a higher price for extras you won't use.
How many weeks of evenings £49.99 buys
Elden Ring is usually played in long sittings, so it helps to translate hours into calendar time. Using our estimated ranges:
- 5 hours a week: the main goal takes roughly 6 to 12 weeks, and the fuller range 18 to 26 weeks.
- 10 hours a week: the main goal takes roughly 3 to 6 weeks, and the fuller range 9 to 13 weeks.
Now the downside: what if a wall of bosses ends your run early? On the £49.99 price:
- Stop after 5 hours and you paid about £10.00 per hour.
- Stop after 15 hours and you paid about £3.33 per hour.
If you are unsure whether its difficulty will suit you, those early-exit numbers are the real risk. Watching footage of the opening area before paying is a cheap way to reduce it.
At ten hours a week, which is a realistic pace for many enthusiasts, the main route lasts roughly three to six weeks.
Who will get poor value from Elden Ring
The honest risk with Elden Ring is not length but fit. It is rated PEGI 16 for violence, so it is not one for younger players.
- Players who dislike difficulty spikes. There is no traditional easy mode. If a boss stops you for days and you put the game down, your cost per hour is whatever you managed before quitting.
- People who want clear direction. Quests are loosely signposted and the story is told in fragments.
- Short-session players. Progress is made in long, focused sittings rather than ten-minute bursts.
If any of those describe you, a cheaper, more forgiving game may give you more enjoyable hours per pound.
On the other hand, if you have enjoyed demanding action games before, Elden Ring's size makes it one of the more efficient full-price purchases you can make. The per-hour figure rewards persistence.
Parents should treat the PEGI 16 rating as a clear guide: the violence and dark fantasy themes are central to the game rather than occasional.
