TheGamer puts the main storyline at about 50 hours and full 'perfection' at 150-200 hours; because the game has no end point, our full range starts lower to reflect players who stop well short of perfection. Prices are RRPs checked 3 November 2026; sales and editions change the maths.
Our rule of thumb: under £1/hr = bargain, £1–£3 = solid, over £3 = pricey per hour. It's a guide, not a verdict on fun.
What counts as "finishing" a farm with no end
Stardew Valley has no credits screen that tells you you're done. The closest thing to a main goal is restoring the Community Center (or the alternative route) and earning a good score in Grandpa's evaluation. TheGamer puts that at around 50 hours, and we use 45 to 60 hours as the main range.
Those hours are made of in-game days: planting, watering, fishing, mining and chatting with townspeople. Each day passes in roughly a quarter of an hour of real time, which makes it easy to play in short sessions.
Early in-game seasons are mostly about learning: what to plant, where to fish, which villagers like which gifts. That learning curve is gentle, and many players find the first season or two pass quickly as they settle into a routine.
Those quarter-hour days also make it easy to stop at a natural point, which helps families manage screen time. A child can play a few in-game days and save, rather than being pulled away mid-quest.
Why the open-ended range is so wide
After the main goals, there is a long tail of optional targets: completing collections, maxing relationships and chasing "perfection". TheGamer estimates 150 to 200 hours to reach full perfection.
Many players never aim for that, which is why our full range starts at 100 hours. Others keep farming long after any goal is met. Because there is no end point, any single number would be misleading, so think of the range as "what most committed players put in", not a limit.
At 100–200 hours, £10.99 becomes about £0.05–£0.11 per hour.
Because so much of the long tail is optional, you can decide how far to take it. Some players set themselves personal challenges, such as an all-fruit farm or a fishing-focused run, which turns a fresh save into a different experience.
That openness is the main reason Stardew Valley so often tops value lists. The price is fixed; the hours are up to you.
Co-op farms and starting over
Replay value comes from two places. First, you can start a new farm with a different map layout, which changes how you plan crops and buildings. Second, the game supports co-op farming with friends, so a shared farm can become a long-running project.
For a household, that makes the per-hour maths even kinder. One person's copy on one device does not cover everyone, though, so check how many copies you need for the way your family plays.
Single-player saves are also personal projects in their own right. Players often restart after a break with a different plan for the farm, and each save can run for dozens of hours.
For value purposes, the key point is that Stardew Valley's hours don't run out in any meaningful sense. The per-hour figure keeps improving for as long as you want to play.
Same price on Steam and Switch
When checked on 3 November 2026, Stardew Valley cost £10.99 on both Steam UK and the Nintendo UK eShop. With the price this low, platform choice is more about where you prefer to play than about saving money.
- On Switch, the portable format suits the game's short in-game days.
- On PC, Steam's version also runs on Mac and Linux.
- Steam UK showed no demo when checked, but at this price the risk is small.
Because the price is identical, there's no money to be saved by choosing one platform over another. The bigger saving comes from simply not needing anything extra: the game is complete at £10.99.
If you're buying for a household with several consoles, remember that each device generally needs its own copy for separate play, which changes the per-person figure. Even then, at £10.99 each it stays cheap per hour.
What £10.99 looks like spread over a season of play
Stardew Valley suits little-and-often play, which spreads its hours across many weeks. On our estimated ranges:
- 3 hours a week: the main goal takes roughly 15 to 20 weeks, and the fuller range 33.5 to 66.5 weeks.
- 7 hours a week: the main goal takes roughly 6.5 to 8.5 weeks, and the fuller range 14.5 to 28.5 weeks.
And if farming life turns out not to be for you? On the £10.99 price:
- Stop after 5 hours and you paid about £2.20 per hour.
- Stop after 10 hours and you paid about £1.10 per hour.
In other words, you only need to play for a few evenings before it becomes cheaper per hour than most games on this site. Even a quick try that doesn't stick costs very little.
Put another way: at a few hours a week, Stardew Valley can easily last a whole school term or longer before the main goals are done.
When Stardew Valley is not worth it
The game is rated PEGI 12, with a gambling descriptor on pegi.info, which parents may want to note before handing it to younger children.
- Players who want excitement. The pace is slow and routine by design.
- People who dislike time pressure. Each day is limited, and some players find the daily clock stressful rather than relaxing.
- Story-first players. There are character stories, but no single driving plot.
If the loop doesn't click within a few hours, the low price at least limits what you lose.
It's also worth noting that the game starts slowly. If the first few in-game days feel uneventful, that's normal, and most of the variety arrives as you unlock new areas and tools.
